On December 22nd and 23rd the black gospel music will be waiting for you with
concerts, workshops and jam sessions!
Asti, December 7th 1999. What expectations for this 5th edition of Asti
Gospel! After one year of break, there will be two days of black music presented
by some of the main artists of the spiritual, gospel and soul seen.

International artists will meet together
for the main Italian festival dedicated to Gospel, Soul and Spirituals.
Asti Gospel has become the most important Italian festival where gospel music finds
its best value. This year the program will be varied and full of appointments: not
only the traditional evening concerts, the artists will present workshops and
confront themselves with the local musicians (and with the audience) during the
night jam sessions.
The reason why the festival has found so much approval among the
audience is its dual goal: on one side to spread the Gospel music bringing to
Italy famous artists of absolute professional and technical level, on the other side
to discover and appreciate local musicians and singers that, without being part of the
world wide circuit of Gospel music, try to reproduce with elegance its spirit and its
themes.
With the legal aid of the Ministerio dei beni e delle attività culturali,
Asti Gospel will be held on December 22nd and 23rd. It's a season when, just before
the Christmas celebration, gospel music is especially appreciated. Among the artists:
Rev. Jessy Dixon & The Chicago Gospel Singers. Pastor Jessy Dixon is a
main character in the gospel music world; he's won 7 Grammy Awards, and he's worked
with Paul Simon, Leo Sayer, Natalie Cole, Diana Ross, Randy Crawford and the Toto.
At Asti Gospel he will present a group of International fame with 8 black singers
from the famous gospel choir of Chicago.
The Soul Stirrers of Chicago. An historical group of the Soul world that has
been playing for more that 50 years; since its foundation in Texas at the end of the
20's, many famous musicians have been playing in the band, among whom Sam Cooke.
From 1989 the group has been framed in the famous Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Tony Hooper & The Mississipi Madcuts. Tony is born in a pentecostal
family in Mississipi, and started to play the guitar at the age of seven. When he
was 12 he had his first concerts playing a kind of southern gospel style that
recalled that of Chet Atkins. In 1995 he founds the group Mudcats and starts his
world tour. Very soon they present their first album, Month of Sundays (UCA Records).
At Asti Gospel they will be presenting the new album "The Sheperd's Field" (Cross
Peace Music).
La Verne Jackson. She's musically born in the Morning Start Baptist Church
(at the age of three she was singing in the Children's Choir!) and brought up in the
Pilgrim Baptist Church Choir of Chicago (Illinois). While performing she also
attanded university gaining a degree in "Fine and Performing Arts".
A part from concerts, TV and radio programs, La Verne Jackson organises workshops
and seminars on gospel music all around the world with the goal of communinating to
the new generations the culture and the roots of the soul's music. At Asti Gospel,
in the afternoons programs she will be helding a workshop with the creation of an
improvised gospel choir that will open the evening concer on the 23rd. Her
performance, full of emotions and spirituality will be accompanied at the piano by
Pippo Guarnera.
