White America's most important contribution to world culture has been the western, but turn to black America and we have the blues, jazz, soul, funk, R&B and rap, all of which can be traced back to the granddaddy of musical genres - gospel. Gospel has its origin in the spirituals sung by rural blacks, and is today experiencing a resurgence in the inner-city black churches. In both instances the music performs the same function - a way of describing and dealing with everyday adversity. The story of gospel is also the story of black America, right from the start when the slaves were forced into a foreign religion, they made it their own and it helped them in troubled times - so spirituals like "To Steal Away" are as much about running away from slavery as they are about religion. Much of the structure of modern gospel is dictated by the restrictions placed on slaves. After the church had conveniently decided that Christians could be enslaved (until then the unspoken justification for slavery was that Christians were fair game), there was an evangelistic rush. The newly converted slaves adapted Methodist hymns - ironically "Amazing Grace", written by a slave captain, was very popular - to the call-and-response song structure of their native land and introduced West African rhythms. However the slaves weren't allowed drums because the plantation owners feared that they might be used for long-distance communication and so clapping hands became the primary form of percussion. Politicisation of gospel is evident right up to the civil rights movement when gospel songs provided anthems and marching songs, from "We Shall Overcome" to the lesser known "There'll Be No Segregation In Heaven". On the day Martin Luther King made his "I Have A Dream" speech, Mahalia Jackson also sang gospel from the same platform. As gospel entered the mainstream it faced another problem - sacred music and its appeal to secular forms. Gli schiavi neo-convertiti adattarono gli inni metodisti (ironicamente la canzone "Amazing Grace", scritta da uno schiavista, era molto popolare tra loro) alla struttura chiamata-risposta tipica della musica africana e introdussero i ritmi dell'Africa occidentale. Tuttavia agli schiavi non era permesso suonare alcun tipo di percussioni perche' i proprietari delle piantagioni temevano che fossero usate per comunicare a distanza: il battito delle mani divenne il principale strumento ritmico. Una progressiva politicizzazione del vangelo e' evidente fino al tempo del Movimento per i diritti civili che produsse inni e marce, da "We Shall Overcome" alla meno nota "There'll Be No Segregation In Heaven". MESSAGE Jesus was referred to in the Bible as the "Lamb of God". Hopefully, in this message I will bring out some things that you have never considered before. Exodus chapter 12 speaks of sacrificing a lamb to God. This lamb had to be a male without spot or blemish. It was to be slaughtered and the blood applied to the door post of the house. This protected the people from God's judgement (Hebrews 10:10-14). This is called the Passover which is a type of Christ to come. Isaiah 53:7, prophesying of the coming of the Messiah, says, "he (Jesus) is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent he opened not his mouth". In describing Jesus in 1 Peter, the writer says 1:19, "But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:". So Christ, who was our sacrifice, was perfect in all ways. He was walking Godly perfection! Verse 20 continues with, "Who verily (truly) was foreordained before the foundation of the world (ages) as manifest in these last times for you". So as we understand this scripture, we see Christ, the lamb of God, sacrificed before the worlds were ever created. How can this be? The answer is... It was in the mind of God. He prepared a way for you and I before he even created the worlds. He knew you while you were yet in your mothers womb. God, being all knowing, prepared a way of salvation through the sacrifice of his Son before the worlds began in order to make you white in the blood of the lamb. So in his life, Christ, who was sent by God the Father, was on a journey to his death because his Father had prepared and sacrificed before the worlds ever were spoke into existence. God remains the same yesterday, today and forever! Revelation chapter 5 verse 6 and 7 speaks of the only one worthy to open the seven sealed book and this was the lamb who had been slain. Jesus is the lamb of God without sin, without spot or blemish. Yet he was convicted as a criminal and sentenced to die on the cross. He paid the highest price possible to save you from hell. He gave his own life and made it a curse to redeem you and I from the bondage of sin and its final consequences. Why couldn't the grave hold him? Why did he raise from the dead? It is because he had done nothing worthy of death. He took our place and went to the cross instead of us as a better sacrifice for our purification (Hebrews 9:25-28). In perfection he was made sin because we could not save ourselves. He raised from the dead because he did not belong there. He made his grave with the wicked though he was perfect. His body couldn't stay there; it was impossible for it to decay. For he was the lamb of God, perfect in every way without sin who was sent from the Father, to restore us to grace that we had lost. Being sinless he was made sin but he remained true his mission and purchased us back with his own blood. Without the shedding of blood there is no remission (forgiveness) of sin. Spulciando tra i "solchi" (reminiscenze "viniliche"!) di questo Navigando, infatti, e' rinvenibile un po' ovunque lo stile di questo giovane ma rodato musicista-compositore. Ed il marchio di fabbrica si sente. Rodato, dicevamo, perche' da oltre dieci anni Luca Genta percorre le strade d'Europa nel nome della musica (la lista delle collaborazioni e' lunga e prestigiosa). Il continuo, ininterrotto peregrinare e' stato, forse, la musa ispiratrice di Navigando - gia' il titolo evoca il viaggio - un disco in divenire, di transizione, di difficile collocazione stilistica. Sulla falsa riga del filone tecno-acustico, ma la definizione e' empirica e riduttiva, questo strumentale e' certamente un buon prodotto per idee e "suppellettili". Manca, pero', qua e la' il peso delle composizioni, che alternano momenti di sapiente lucidita' a situazioni sofferenti di latente spessore artistico. Sopra tutto, comunque, Luca Genta e la sua creativita' poliedrica. Oltre a firmare tutti i brani contenuti nella raccolta, Genta si cimenta con effervescente maestria alle tastiere, alle percussioni, al violoncello, al basso elettrico, alla programmazione delle basi ritmiche, ai flauti, alla chitarra classica. Con la consapevolezza di trovarci di fronte ad un "prodigio" (mi si passi l'eufemismo), si perdonano volentieri le poche smagliature che, comunque, non precludono affatto la gradevolezza del risultato complessivo. Episodi come la stessa Navigando, che titola l'album, o Asian Sky, efficace esempio di "world music" - dove oriente ed occidente interagiscono in un dipingendo multicolore di suoni ed emozioni, o la bellissima Smoking Mountain, dove Luca Genta fa tutto incredibilmente da solo (!), testimoniano che la classe non =E8 acqua. Di classe anche gli altri musicisti, calati ad hoc nelle atmosfere dei componimenti (Grooving Waves, per esempio, dove emerge l'ottimo Mike Haughton al sax soprano). Un disco strumentale e' un progetto ambizioso, anche le aspettative, quindi, hanno il diritto di esserlo. Navigando le ha soddisfatte quasi tutte.
