I got the Iona bug about two years ago now and fortunately haven't got a cure for it just yet. I saw them for the first time at the Kensington Temple gig at the beginning of October this year, and am thus rather peeved that they are having a year off, if this is true! Anyway, to warm round to my question, why is it that they don't seem too keen on having fiddles in their music (I must point out the violin/fiddle difference at this point so as to avoid thousands of protests telling me about Machrie Moor on BTS), as surely the style lends itslef to one sometimes? After eight and a half years of albums and touring it now feels like the right time for a period of reassessment, renewing of our vision, concentration on our families and to focus on writing the next album .... A unique joint concert is being planned for 29th May 1999 at the Royal Festival Hall in London. All being well, Iona will be appearing with the All Souls Orchestra performing full band / orchestral arrangements of many well known Iona pieces as well as new material from the next album...It may be that the Festival Hall date will be part of a major UK album launch tour." [Nothing till 1999 ?? 8-((((((((] iona.uk.com [sic] "Recently, those of you with internet access may have noticed the diappearance of Ron Lindeboom's Iona web site. Ron decided to call it a day, after several years of running the site. We would like to take this opportunity of thanking both Ron and Johan Versendaal for their many efforts in raising the band's profile in this still relatively new medium. Soon the vband will finally have its own official Iona web site at the above address. It is hoped that it will be up and running by mid December" [Assuming they have bought a domain name I would expect it to be iona.com.uk and *not* as stated] Troy's solo album is called THE UNSEEN TROY, scheduled for February release via Alliance / EMI. Phil will feature in a forthcoming issue of "Bassist" magazine (interview); Dave will feature in the Jan/Feb edition of "Fingerstyle Guitar" (USA) - includeing a solo piece for the accompanying CD. Other items in FoI include Part 2 of Jo's diary of the voyage of Colmcille, Dave's review of the summer festivals; a profile of Phil; and a few quotes. Of the other possible names, they're all taken: iona.co.uk - belongs to a Scottish ISP iona.com - belongs to an Irish company called Iona Technologies iona.org.uk - belongs to the Iona Community iona.org - belongs to an American organisation called Iona Senior Services so they haven't really got any choice at the moment (other than registering the domain in a foreign registry, or using a subdomain of an existing name). However, there are a number of new top level domains due to be introduced, which would allow them to apply for "iona.arts" (the .arts domain is for "for entities emphasizing cultural and entertainment activities" which would suit the band, I think). I had heard of them years ago, but when someone told me they were "new-age" (or so THEY thought), I refused to listen to them. Boy do I regret listening to that persons advice that time! Earlier this year my fiance was throwing some old cassettes, (that had been given to her by an unsaved person, because she was already Christian), in the direction of a newly saved youth neighbor of hers, so that he wouldn't listen to all that secular garbage out there. Two of the cassettes were IONA!!! "IONA", and "Journey into the Morn"! Well we had recently seen "Riverdance" on PBS and I fell in love with the music, come to find out I'm part Irish myself but never really liked the music until I heard the Uilleann Pipes and I was just mesmerized by the sounds. Well the youth came over later and said hey Rog, check this out, it SOUNDS like "Riverdance". I looked at the badly worn j-card and read the lyrics, and said to myself, hey they really ARE Christians. I was saddened, but I didn't show it, because I didn't want him or my fiance to think bad about that band. So I borrowed it, and anxiously took it to work the next day and listened to it ALL day long, THREE days in a row. The kid wanted it back, so I went to our local Heaven & Earth and ordered eveything ever put out by this wonderful NEW group, only to realize in my heart, that I could have been listening to them and experiencing IONA for years. So I said all that to preface this. I've come from mainly a rock and metal background. I'm the drummer on my Praise & Worship Band (11 years now) and also in a local Christian Band, we are NOT metal, but I was in a local metal band for 2 years back in "88 -'89, we even got to open for "WhiteCross"!!! Now I said that to explain this diversity which follows. This is very HARD for me to narrow it down to 5 favorites, but here it is: 1) IONA (absolutly #1) (Terl is an AWESOME drummer/percussionist!) 2) Idle Cure (they WERE my #1, excellent vocals and anointed lyrics) 3) Stryper (yes, the Christian Metal Band) also (anything that Michael Sweet, Robert Sweet, Tim Gaines, and Oz Fox might be soloing on or just playing on!) ... they had a great influence on my life, it was their brand of JESUS music through the Holy Spirit, that FINALLY reached me. So say what you want about them and/or their style, but in the late '80's their music was ANOINTED to reach metal fans, and rock & rollers everywhere. Some of which will probably read this and think back, "yeah, he's right, after all, they DID pave the way for other Christian bands worldwide!" Being a drummer I was totally fascinated by Robert's drumming, the tremendous guitar work, and their angelic harmonies. 4) Michael W. Smith (very versatile) 5) Hosanna Integrity Music, VineYard, Rhema Singers & Band. (anything!)
